St Lawrence Church
Our present Church is already over 150 years old and is a splendid building. It is a sobering thought that the total cost was just £3,070 - barely enough to build a decent porch in 1999, but a great deal of money then, and a considerable achievement for a small village of just 1,070 souls.

(An extract from 'A Celebration of Our Village' from St. Lawrence Church.)

Discreet now perhaps, but when the first parish Church was built here in the small clearing in the forest that once covered the area, it would have dominated the hamlet clustered around the ancient farm of Bury. Thus was born 'Bufan dune' or 'above the down', shortly after the year 1200. By 1295 some 74 people were registered in the area and 'Buendon', 'Bovingdon' had become an established village of some substance.
