TAKE A WALK

In 1991 a scheme known as the Parish Paths Partnership was started by the Countryside Commission to encourage parishes to take a greater interest in and improve their paths.
Stiles have been repaired, paths cleared and all are now clearly signposted and way – marked.
Why not take a stroll and discover or rediscover the paths for yourself.
Around Bovingdon and Flaunden there are 6 walks, which have been described in past issues of the Bovingdon News. The walks are also published on the back of the Bovingdon village Millennium Parish Map, The map is to a large scale and covers the parishes of Bovingdon and Flaunden, with all the footpaths and bridleways clearly marked.

The map is decorated with illustrations of Bovingdon and Flaunden Parish Churches on the covers, and a series of local scenes. Grants from the Countryside Management Services and Dacorum Borough Council helped towards the costs of production.
The impetus to produce the map arose in 1997 when Bovingdon Library won an 'Art at Work ' award to commission art work which would reflect the local community. The idea of some form of Parish Map was decided on. A well attended exhibition of the varied types of parish map was held in the Memorial Hall early in 1998. There were many examples of paper maps and also designs in metalwork, mosaics, tapestry and quilting. As the result of the feedback received, a metal sculpture was commissioned and now is mounted on the Library wall, illustrating key features of Bovingdon.
With the encouragement of Countryside Management Services, a project to produce a paper decorative map was also started. This was not as simple as it seemed as there was a bewildering choice of possible mapping detail, colour schemes and means of illustration. Fortunately, at the time there were 2 people living in Bovingdon with the skills to create the map.
Copies of 'Bovingdon Village Walk' and 'Bovingdon and Flaunden Footpath map' are available from the Library.
